📵 3G Shutdown – What Kiwi VoIP Mobile Users Need to Know
📡 What’s Happening?
Kiwi VoIP Mobile operates on the 2degrees network, which has announced it will be shutting down its 3G service from late 2025.
This is part of a global move to phase out older mobile technologies in favour of faster, more reliable 4G and 5G networks.
🕒 When Is This Happening?
-
2degrees: 3G network shut down starts late 2025
-
Spark & One NZ: Also shutting down 3G around the same time
-
Overseas: Some international providers have already shut theirs down
🤔 Why Is This Happening?
3G was introduced in 2009, but:
-
It's now outdated and less efficient
-
Shutting it down frees up spectrum to boost 4G/5G speed and coverage
-
2degrees is upgrading all 3G-only areas with 4G before the switch-off
📱 What Do I Need to Do?
-
Most modern devices will work without any changes.
-
Some phones may need VoLTE (Voice over 4G) enabled in settings.
-
Older phones may not support VoLTE and will need to be replaced.

🔍 What Is VoLTE?
VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE (4G).
It lets you make HD-quality voice calls using 4G instead of falling back to 3G.
