🔄 Kiwi VoIP – Should You Use PPPoE or DHCP?
When connecting to Kiwi VoIP Fibre Broadband, you can choose between two common methods: PPPoE and DHCP (also known as IPoE). Both are supported, but the right choice depends on your router, your network setup, and how you prefer to manage your connection.
🔐 PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet)
PPPoE is a traditional and widely used method for broadband connections. It requires a username and password to connect and creates an active session between your router and Kiwi VoIP.
✅ Pros:
-
Maintains an active session — gives us better visibility into your connection
-
Useful for diagnostics — provides more detail on connection drops
⚠️ Cons:
-
Requires manual setup (username, password, possibly VLAN tagging)
-
Factory reset routers may not work unless reconfigured
⚡ DHCP / IPoE (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
DHCP is becoming the default option for many broadband users. Most routers are preconfigured for DHCP, which makes setup much easier — especially after a factory reset.
✅ Pros:
-
Plug-and-play — no credentials needed
-
Works with factory reset routers
-
Easy to test — connect a laptop directly to your ONT to verify service
-
Slightly faster speeds (lower overhead vs PPPoE)
⚠️ Cons:
-
Doesn’t provide detailed session info to the ISP (harder to diagnose some issues)
❗ Important Setup Note
You cannot use both PPPoE and DHCP at the same time on the same connection. Doing so may cause connection failures or unstable service.
👉 Please choose only one method when configuring your router.
🛠️ Not Sure Which to Use?
-
If you received login credentials from Kiwi VoIP, you're likely set up for PPPoE
-
If your router connects automatically without credentials, it's probably using DHCP
